Japan House Los Angeles has unveiled its latest exhibition, “Yes, KAWAII is Art – EXPRESS YOURSELF –.” Teaming up with the legendary Harajuku artist, Sebastian Masuda, this showcase is not just an exhibition but a celebration of individuality, self-expression, and the boundless realm of kawaii!
Walking into the exhibition feels like stepping into a kaleidoscope of imagination. Sebastian Masuda’s artwork adorns the gallery space, each piece telling a story of its own. Masuda’s creations reflect not only his personal journey with kawaii but also the rich history and evolution of kawaii culture and fashion. One particularly nostalgic touch is the famous world clock that once adorned The Moshi Moshi Box, an iconic information center in Harajuku, Tokyo, brought here by Masuda himself.
One of the highlights of the exhibition is Colorful Rebellion -Seventh Nightmare-, an immersive room installation inspired by the Seven Deadly Sins. Stepping into this room is like entering a dream world where every corner bursts with kawaii charm. From plushies to toys, the room is a symphony of colors and textures that ignite the senses.
Another interactive program is Sense Share Bear, a VR experience where you can unleash your creativity by painting a white bear with various features and backgrounds.
During the VIP reception, Yuko Kaifu, the President of Japan House Los Angeles, introduced Masuda for an inspirational speech. He emphasized that kawaii is for anyone and everyone. Age, race, and gender don’t matter, and there’s no right way to be kawaii. If there are 1 million people, there should be 1 million different ways to express “kawaii.”
On Saturday, May 4th, Harajuku Day’s popup will be held at Ovation Hollywood, inviting everyone to immerse themselves in the world of kawaii! From the Kawaii Fashion Show to pop-up booths featuring 6%DOKIDOKI from the exhibition creator and artist, Sebastian Masuda, along with local vendors, it’s a chance to experience what Japan’s kawaii culture is all about! The event runs from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM, and admission is free.

ABOUT SEBASTIAN MASUDA
Masuda began his career in theater and contemporary art in the early 1990s. In 1995, he opened the fashion shop 6%DOKIDOKI which became a platform for artistic expression. Currently working out of both Tokyo and New York, Masuda creates works that transcend the boundaries of art, fashion, and entertainment, showcasing a consistent and unique sense of color. From 2009 to 2011, Masuda conducted the “Harajuku Kawaii Experience” world tour, spreading awareness about the history of Harajuku and kawaii culture in over 20 cities, with a focus on Europe and the United States. As art director for Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s 2011 “PONPONPON” music video, Masuda was pivotal in introducing kawaii culture to the world. In 2015, he created Tokyo’s Kawaii Monster Cafe, and in 2023, produced the restaurant SUSHIDELIC in New York, further contributing to the global recognition of kawaii culture.
