The Gudetama Café is now officially open! We were so “egg”-cited for the grand opening of the Sanrio-themed café in Buena Park, CA when it was first announced last month.
Created in 2013 by Sanrio designer Amy (Emi Nagashima), Gudetama is an anthropomorphic egg yolk that always seems to be lacking a bit of energy. The name Gudetama (ぐでたま) is derived from the words “gudegude” (ぐでぐで), meaning lazy in Japanese, and “tamago” (たまご), meaning egg. Literally, Gudetama is translated as a lazy egg. Since their inception, the apathetic yolk has become so popular, that they’ve stared in their own hit TV series on Netflix, Gudetama: An Eggcellent Adventure (2022).
Gudetama Café is a unique casual dining experience, which features some “egg”-quisite sandwiches, burgers, and drinks, with our favorite lackadaisical egg at the center of attention.
Some of the ooey gooey “gude”-ness you’ll be able to enjoy is the mouth-watering A(meh)zing Double Egg and Cheese sandwich. The fresh take on the Whatever Avocado Toast will leave you feeling sunny (-side up, that is). Pair your meal with a side of piping hot, crispy Tater Tots, or, if you’re feeling a little “egg”-tra, the savory Bacon Cheese Tots are sure to hit the spot. Quench your thirst with an icy Lemonade, creamy Matcha Milk Tea… Or, how about a specialty Cremé Brulee or Affogato Ice Cream Cold Brew? For dessert, a light and airy cream puff, courtesy of Beard Papa’s, is a perfect treat to end the meal. Check out the entire menu!
Our personal favorites?
💛 Gude Katsu, Egg, and Cheese
The tender and crispy Chicken Katsu, pressed between a buttery Brioche Bun and a melty slice of American Cheese was a nice twist on the traditional chicken sandwich. The house special Spicy Chili Sauce gave it that extra kick that was just the chef’s kiss. If you’re looking for something picture-worthy, you’ll definitely want to try this one. The fluffy bun is seared with an image of Gudetama in his fashionable chef’s hat. And, it wouldn’t be Gudetama Café without the iconic “meh” face on a runny egg yolk. Honestly, this was just too cute; we had a hard (boiled) time eating this delectable sandwich .
💛 Sleepy Sliders
The sliders made us anything but sleepy! The juicy wagyu beef patty already sounded fancy. But what really made it “egg”-ceptional was the Quail Egg, wrapped in Mozzarella, and deep fried into a crispy meat-, or rather, egg ball. Placed between a Brioche Bun and topped with a Baby Leaf and Spicy Ketchup, this unique combination was anything but basic.
💛 Sparkling Mango
If you want something a little different, go with the refreshing Sparkling Mango. An icy, fizzy drink with a sweet mango syrup is perfect for that hot summer day. Be sure to grab a thick straw, because the Mango White Pearl at the bottom will add that extra fruity flavor and chewiness that’s just waiting to burst in your mouth.
Get your cameras ready, because there are dozens of a-“meh”-zing photo opportunities, inside and out. The playful, bright yellow and white decor is sure to bring a smile to your face.
There are literally Gudetamas everywhere. Up, down, and all around; even the restrooms! Be sure to take a look.
This is the first official Gudetama Café in the United States, and undoubtedly, the first few days since opening have been quite busy. But, worry not! This is a permanent location, so drop in when you’re not feeling too lazy. Right across from Knott’s Berry Farm, the iconic and eye-catching yellow building is sure to be the next big attraction in Orange County, CA.
